Today I want to demistify the profession of the computer specialist. But why would I ever take time, sit down and put down black on white the differences between “Computer Technician” and “Systems Engineer”?

By having a clear picture of how IT services are offered, and how is the work divided, you will hopefully be able to better choose for yourself tomorrow, when it comes to hiring, collaborating, or deciding where to invest your time and money.

What Is a Computer Specialist?

All the applications that you happily use, including this website, have a computer specialist behind them to keep operations productive, compliant, and secure. In this article I want to answer the most searched questions about computer specialists and support technicians, as well as for network engineers, and other IT professionals, so you can understand how modern application management works, choose the talent you need for your team… or the career path you want as a specialist.

A computer specialist, also known as an IT specialist, is the profession that focuses on managing information management tools for your company… and by reflection focuses on managing the computer systems that offer your services and support your business. The degree of experience and seniority is usually inversely correlated with the degree of practicality of the profession, where the more you are specialized, the more you tend to have architectural or sales posisition that don’t touch the terminal.

The simplest iteration of this profession is “the computer tech person” which is a professional who plans, implements, troubleshoots, and improves digital systems for an office or SMB. They bridge hardware, software, and human workflows so computers actually deliver value… while at the other end of the spectrum we have Systems Architect which talk directly to sales.

The most common silos in which work is divided are:

  • Customer Support Center: Delivers help-desk support, first contact point with the customer, resolves tickets, and educates users. This role is the most misunderstood, has a lot of potential since it’s directly customer facing, and determines the perception of your company when someone picks up their phone! Unfortunaltely this role is often sold to specialist third parties that concentrate multiple support groups together abroad. You need someone who can handle emails, calls, link, and information professionally and up to your standard!
  • Security Specialist: Protects people, information, and infrastructure against malware, ransomware, and data breaches. The Sec Ops is one of the most stressful professions due to the required rational approach to vulnerability and security. It’s lately evolving into requiring forensics and law basics.
  • Network Specialist: Interconnects systems and offices, designing and mainining LAN, WAN and VPN segments both physically and in the cloud. A network specialists configures networking applicances to keep teams connected and network traffic segregated. The network specialist is a really vertical niche that goes from cable crimping to firewall management and is crossing with computer security.
  • Computer Technician: Repairs devices, configures components, and handles lifecycle management. This is the specialist that you most commonly see in physical independent shops, he tries to repair the physical assets you see everyday like computers of course, but also phones, network material and printers! The Computer specialist must be very horizontal, and know a little bit of everything.
  • Programmer, the developer: Developers translate thoughts about information processing in declarative recipes that handle real data to achieve a desired result. They are the custodiary of your thought process and it’s important to show trust to your developers! Their work usually only shows up when things go wrong. Shh! Give them the development servers they asked for.
  • Systems Engineer: Systems Engineers configure the operating systems to offer applications as services on the market. Applications written by developers need hardware resources to run, so the Systems Engineer configures the Operating System to allocate resources to processes. The operating system is the application set that allows code written by developers to be executed on your hardware. This is my profession.
  • Application Engineer: For the applications that are part of your core offering, it’s suggested to have an Application Engineer, who configures them specifically. This role is often part of the Systems Engineer’s role.
  • DevOps: The Developer/Operations role has emerged after 2010 as a response to the increasing pressure and demand on developers. Developer need time to make great code. DevOps handle the operational side like small changes, releases, and fixes, so Developers can focus on code quality.
  • Architect: The architect is a senior Systems Engineer with a vision and good communication skills. He bridges the gap with sales by proposing detailed solutions to tangible problems! He knows how it is for the Developers, the Technicians, and the Systems Engineers out there, and his role is to sell solutions, without creating problems for the techicians.
  • AI Strategist: A person dedicated to exploring how AI can fit into the company structure, automate projects, and resolve big-data problems with it. Since each business has its own particular processes and “inside trends”, structuring some definitions to repetitively apply them to AI when generating content in the context of your business is the new way of getting good quality content.

What Do Computer Specialists Do Day to Day?

Skills You Need to Be a Computer Specialist

Modern job descriptions combine software, hardware, operations, and validation expertise. At least on paper. In reality this all goes hand in hand with specific software and fields experiences, and keep in mind the most overlooked skill is Communication:

  • Operating systems and scripting skills: Windows, macOS, Linux… Bash and PowerShell
  • Networking (TCP/IP stack, DNS, firewalls, Domains) with strong documentation habits.
  • Cybersecurity frameworks plus malware response and forensics application specalization. Like NIST, ISO 27001, or any security firewall vendor.
  • Cloud administration (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, AWS, Azure).
  • Documentation skills: You NEED to know how to use a word processor
  • Truffle-hunting approach to information searching: You NEED to know how to search on Google, or how to “Search”, how to pick a “format:” or how to search inside a specific “domain:”
  • Soft skills: storytelling, service documentation, and stakeholder alignment.

How Do You Become a Computer Specialist?

  1. Education: Start with vocational courses, and commit only after trying all fields: coding, automation, devops, security, cloudadmin, network…
  2. Computer specialist courses & exams: Based on what you like, you can specialize in vendor technologies, with cloud certifications for Google, AWS or Microsoft, or to specifically study Linux with courses like RHCSA or RHCE. Network path has its own Cisco courses. Check out the solutions architect certifications requirements for each vendor.
  3. Hands-on approach: INSTALL LINUX. Practice hardware diagnostics, ticketing workflows, and automation tasks using virtual labs or internships.
  4. Portfolio & storytelling: Document projects, operations runbooks, and incident reports to show impact.

How long does it take to become a computer specialist? Entry-level help-desk roles are beginner friendly. In 6–18 months you can land your first certification and significantly speed up your growth. Advanced paths like computer forensics specialist or security analyst often require 3–5 years of experience plus targeted certifications.

Pathways by Specialization

Some example of classical and more modern specialization pathways for computer specialists.

  • Customer Support Center: Focus on customer service, troubleshooting scripts, and remote support platforms. Many teams allow flexible or fully remote schedules, so yes—support specialists can absolutely work from home.
  • Security Specialist: Study threat hunting, SOC metrics, penetration testing, and digital forensics. Certify on sec products.
  • Network Specialist: Gain routing/switching experience, complete CCNP/Juniper certs, and practice network validation.
  • Computer Technician: Master device imaging, hardware diagnostics, and procurement vendor management.
  • Programmer, the developer: Develop software engineering depth with AI, automation, or computer vision projects.
  • Systems Engineer and DevOps: Develop infrastructures, offer your own services online, certify on operating systems, or join a SRE team globally.
  • Application Engineer: Defintely develop and offer your apps online to understand the pains you’re going to solve.

  • AI Strategist: Try new AIs and work with format interoperations, find new ways of combining data and extracting value.
